If any of you have your own places that used to have fencing or structures, you might want to invest in a $50 metal detector from Radio Shack. After 2 nails in hooves, I bought a detector and went over our stalls, breezeway, and turnout. I now have half a bucket (5 gallon bucket) of just nails and wire bits (threw out the other odd pieces of metal) that are real hoof pokers. We expanded our round pen yesterday, and I ran the detector over the new areas and found 30 more nails and wire bits. As it rains and the ground gets turned up by hooves, more objects appear, so I run the detector a couple times a year. It will detect a nail about 6 inches deep. It's one of the best things I ever bought, and who knows how many countless vet bills it has saved. I also use it after the farrier leaves, as sometimes there are nails or nail tips that get left behind.Dixie Mom "The art of riding: Keeping a horse between you and the ground!"
