I had a lesson on Zack on saturday and it went very well. I discussed with my teacher the issue about me being worried about actually using a whip to make him pay attention and she didn't think a tap would make him 'freak out' and she was right. It just made him pay attention and do what I was telling him to do!! :0) I rode him again yesterday morning on my own in the school in the BB and once again he was fantastic. He started off trying his usual trick of trotting for a few yards when asked then going back to a walk despite me still trying to make him go on so I gave him a tap and said 'TROT ON!' as though I actually meant it and HE DID! After that I got a brilliant forward going trot, non-stop untill I told him to stop, and I got the feeling he was enjoying himself more than he usually does. I finished yesterdays ride on a real high, feeling much more optamistic and confident than i have felt for weeks. Bye for now Megan

That is exactly what I'm doing with Iroquois. Now I have the confidence to push him on I don't let him stop on his own. I say what pace he does. Well done you!!!!!! ---------- Bitless - not witless!

We went out for a hack today round the farm block (where I was trying to take him when I last fell off). We were with 2 other horses and riders, only one of which he had been out with before. That was Jazz, who we jokingly call 'Zack's wife' after they were so in love when she was last in season!! The other one was a black cob who's not getting out much at the moment because his owner is pregnant and he was being ridden by a very acomplished rider from the yard who is helping his owner out. To start with I had to get someone else to come and hold Zack so that I could get on! I don't usually have that problem but I think he was very excited at going out with 2 horses or perhaps it was the prospect of going out with Jazz! :0) But once we got going he settled right down and behaved like a dream. To start with Zack and Jazz were walking side by side with the other one behind, then Zack pulled away in front and led the way for the middle part of the ride. Every now and then Linda or Alison would call out and ask if I was alright, and I would call out that I was fine - well I was - just about!! Then Jazz started leading for the last part of the ride with Alison and me behind. I think Alison was having to keep her wits about her with Bex because he was very lively having not been out for a while and I must admit that I was a bit concerned that Zack would pick up on his behaviour and follow suit but all he was doing for most of the ride, which is pretty normal for Zack when he has a bit in his mouth, was trying to evade it. Well I think thats what he's doing - he sort of stretches his neck out, opens his mouth, sticks his tongue out and trys desperately to get it over the bit. I don't get ANY of these antics when he is in his BB but I just don't have the confidence to ride him out in it yet. Anyway sorry for waffling but overall I felt it was a good ride and it was good to get the farm block done again without mishap as I have had bit of an issue about riding THERE after the last attempt! I've ridden out a couple of other times since the fall but gone on a different route. Bye for now Megan

Sounds like you are going great. I am having a bit problem here. I decided to get some help because my experience has been with Quarter horses and my new hero is a Fox Trotter. I think he is into the bit because I do not have all of my ducks in a row. We go Monday to a new trainer who is going to set up a program to work on as well as doing some ground work. I know this will help as I just got on Jethro and started riding him not knowing how he would act. I hope I can do as well as you seem to be doing.
