So its been a month since I've ridden so I was curious how lesson would go tonight... it was thunder/lightning storm on the drive over and it started a torrential downpour while I was tacking up... Normally I don't ride if the weather is bad since I'm kind of a ninny about extra noise but I wasn't feeling nervous and I have been feeling really ready to get back in the saddle (AND GET A HORSE!!!). So I mounted up, found my stirrup (I usually flail around a bit) with no problems... did some balance stuff on the lunge, trotted and I actually did REALLY well sitting Star's trot (I NEVER sit his trot!) and mostly managed to get my legs to relax and unlocked my hips... Then she undid the lunge line, gave me the reins and I just rode him around the ring, it was awesome! I tensed a few times where the indoor is soft and he had a hard time with that footing but other than that it was great! I didn't want to get down! Woohoo!!! My instructor said its themost relaxed she thinks she's seen me. Love it!!!

Good job, Izabella! I'm glad your first lesson after being off for a while went so well. That gives you a great jumping off point for more lessons (or more just riding in general) leading up to getting your own horse! How is the search going, BTW?

Congratulations again on the great ride!!! :o)

Thanks everyone!
Well quick update... I ended up not having lesson Thursday cause my cat was sick so I had to go to the vet... but I decided to go try some horses up at Hemphills (they do a lot of camp horses and general sales, the camp horses are pretty much gone but they had 60 or so yesterday!) I brought our neighbor who has horses, the girl who used to ride my crazy paint and her mom who is a friend from work and we had a "girls day". They showed us probably 10 horses, tried about 6... nearly had another oops with this cute little chestnut gelding, smoothest trot EVER! But when they took him on the road and told me to drive by and beep (yes they did!) he flinched a bit then the neighbors giant dog came out barking and he spun so fast... I would have been one with pavement... so that was a no... Then they brought out this mare, 18yrs, 15.3 hands, has been used for camp, totally sound that we can see... we rode her for a good hour after her not being ridden in 2 weeks, she didn't like the western saddle as much but in the english she picked up her leads fine, looks like she might have a little arthritis but after a little bit worked out of her stiffness, she's not a big fan of trotting but with a little work (and I could do it so it really wasn't work) and I CANTERED HER!!! NO LUNGE LINE!!! AND I HAD FUN!!! :) And if I got a little unsettled and nervous she would slow right down for me but if I put a little leg on she would go easy as pie... put up with my terrible sitting trot and her trot was even better with posting. Had bugs at her but didn't freak... they took her down the road and I beeped, she just looked... he opened mailboxes from her back... all good. Then I picked up all her feet after her tiring day and she gave them to me, held them for a good minute each without even shifting around!!! So I've got pics and videos, if i can figure out how to post them I'll put up a link so you guys can have a look! But its looking really good! I love it too cause the old gal's got spunk!! :)

Izabella, BUY THAT MARE!!! It sounds like she's worth her weight in gold! :oD

Congratulations to you for having such a good ride on her. She sounds *very* promising . . . provided you're sure you can trust the sellers. As long as you're absolutely certain that she's sound and that she wasn't aced when you rode her, go for it! She sounds awesome! :o)

Gosh, that sounds really good! You should definitely consider buying her. If you do, just make sure you get a prepurchase exam. A vet can tell you if she's got any "issues" and, if she does, whether they are manageable. I once passed on a great mare who showed up with severe osteoarthritis and a club foot. Both showed up in the x-rays at the vet check. If there are physical issues and you still want the mare, at least you know what you'll be dealing with.

Good luck!
