....Katie's next!

Have to wait about a week, though, since Kyle had a horse fall on his leg and he didn't want to tackle breaking a horse until his leg is healed up more.

I had a lovely lesson on Jewel this evening, though. Kyle lunged me on her and she was very well behaved. I think he wanted to make sure I was comfortable on her before he sent her home, because he waited until after my lesson to tell me I could take her home with me if I wanted.

He says it took her about a week before she figured out that it was better to quit moving her feet if she was scared, and after that she just got real calm. He says he actually packed on her a couple of times, with an actual pack saddle. He had another horse he was training, so he'd pack Jewel up the mountain, then switch saddles and ride Jewel back down and pack the other horse. He says she did just fine.

Actually, he says that he's really enjoyed riding her. See, Kyle's never trained/ridden a gaited horse before. He thinks she's just the most beautiful horse ever and he loves her thick, long mane. He says he loves how, in his words, she "boogies." She foxtrotted a bit with me on the lunge, and when she went into it he said, "Okay, that gait right there? That's as smooth as glass and she really boogies. I'm telling you, that is so fun to ride." Yes, I said, that is a fox trot (and yes, she was so relaxed she actually was foxtrotting, with a lot of head shake; when she's nervous she tends to single-foot). I said her lope is nice, too. He said, "Yeah, I love her lope, she's so fast and smooth!" I smiled and leaned over, pointing at Katie who I had brought for the hell of it, and I said "See that grey horse? She's even smoother." And Kyle's eyes got round as saucers and he said, "Really?" and a smile twitched at the corners of his mouth....

I also told him he'd be getting both horses next spring for a refresher course. Don't you know he was all over THAT! I think I may have made the man into a closet foxtrotter fan. :)

Wonderful!! I'm so happy for you Meezer. I hope you have a long fall so you can enjoy all the work that went into Jewel. I can't wait to hear how Katie comes along too.
